The Khaki 5K is the annual fundraiser of MATSA. Join us March 30th in Historic Downtown Harrisonburg, VA for healthy fun with your favorite heroes in khakis! This years race will be dedicated to our very own JMU alum and NATA Hall of Fame Inductee, Nancy Burke.

MATSA is having its Annual Khaki 5k. This 5K and 1 mile walk will make its way through the heart of historic downtown Harrisonburg, VA. Located at the end of the National Athletic Training Month, this race serves to raise awareness for the profession of athletic training and honor its important professionals. This year our honoree will be Nancy Burke, the first James Madison University graduate to enter the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA)Hall of Fame. This run is the primary fundraiser for the Madison Athletic Training Student Association (MATSA), in association with James Madison University (JMU) and its Sports Medicine Department. MATSA aids in the enrichment of knowledge and the advancement of the athletic training profession for James Madison University students and community.
Nancy Burke began her career more than four decades ago as one of the first athletic trainers in the Fairfax County Public Schools System in Virginia. Burke and her colleagues were responsible for building and growing the district’s athletic training program that now includes two Athletic Trainers in every high school. She used her expertise to expand the profession to the public safety sector, beginning with the Fairfax County Police Department. She was the first athletic trainer hired by a law enforcement agency, and her program has become a model for similar programs across the country. Always a trailblazer, Burke became an athletic trainer when there were few women in the profession and was the first woman to join the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association. After the merger of U.S. Women’s Lacrosse Association and Men’s Lacrosse, she served as co-chair and chair of its Sports Science and Safety Committee for a decade. The committee is regarded as a medical model for other governing bodies in sports.

PARKING:
Parking will be available FREE downtown on the street or in any of the parking decks.
START/FINISH:
The race starts and finishes at Liberty Park.

Awards will be presented to the top 3 Overall Male and Female finishers as well as the top 3 Male and Female in Age groups: 18-35, 36-55, 56+
